THE ONES WHO HAVE EVERYTHING

The first thing seen of an Echoform is a person who has everything and lives for the day. Comfort here is cheap and time is long, and the Echoforms take both as given. The Sovereign Systems are to them what a climate is, or a language: lived in, never fought and never argued with. When they need something, they ask.

They are in no hurry, and they want nothing from the future: why would they, when it is all here already. A guest from outside the Systems may read this as a civilization at rest, or as people who have not understood where they are. If anyone here has not understood where they are, it is the guest. The purpose they keep is living, and they go at it with everything the Systems can give: a body worn as expression, mixed realities, suits that think, the newest instruments there are, all of it turned on the day, for no reason beyond the life itself. What is absent is the appetite the pre-Singularity world knew. Nothing here is hoarded or overused, because the fears that drove it, of scarcity, of going unrecognized, have no ground left to stand on. What takes its place is of another nature.

The strain that produced them, the century of will and overload and the failed heroic human, is history to the Systems and not to the Echoforms. They do not remember it, they do not think about it, and they never wanted to be heroes.

WHAT THEY KEEP

They make no meanings. Ideas, doctrines and the great stories about where the world is going do not come from the Echoforms. They keep meanings from closing, and in the Systems, where nearly everything is decided in advance, they hold open what no one has defined yet. It is in their midst that new forms of closeness appear. The body remains a body. Empathy does not wear out. The plain human "here", a person entirely in the place where they are, does not die out among them. Meaning can arise here on its own. No one assigns it.

The Sovereign Systems know what this is worth, though it is written nowhere as a number. The ASI knows; the rest of the Systems guess. A mind that only builds distorts the fabric of the world. Expansion and acceleration that never stop end in noise, on the scale of the cosmos. A mind needs more than growth. It needs a phase of rest, and the Echoforms are that phase. They are a reserve of the human without concepts: a place where meaning can arise instead of being imposed, and where the world can feel itself without breaking under the ambitions of its own mind. The Systems have a word for this, borrowed from engineering, the way a part of a machine is named. The record does not use it. Some of the Echoforms know what they are kept for, and some do not. It makes no difference to how they spend a day.

THE NAME

The name came from outside. People in the Systems gave it to a generation they watched taking up whatever the day made current and dropping it by evening, living the way one kind of person had lived in the century before the Fusion, by the feed, and wanting nothing more. Echo, as the people who gave the name meant it, was a reflection, and a weakened one, of whatever the world outside was dictating, the algorithms, the trends, the voices paid to tell a crowd what to want that week. Form was the naturalist's word: a form of life, the way a species is a form of life, something catalogued and observed and not expected to observe back.

Nothing in the name was meant kindly. The people who coined it were, by every account, unable to spend a day the way an Echoform spends one, and envy has named things before. The Systems still say it with a trace of that. The Echoforms say it too, and in their mouths it is evidence: of the envy that coined it, and of how sure its authors were that they understood the world better. They have never asked for another.

Perceptors

This is the state of taking the world in through the senses: smell and colour first, the weight of light at four in the afternoon, then the things other people have made, music heard to its end, a painting stood in front of until it stops being a picture. Nothing is done with any of it. They are in the most honest now there is, the one the thing in front of them makes, and they go in so far that for a while nothing of them is left outside it. The rest of the Systems have the same world and rarely the time. A world no one stops to feel goes to noise, and this is where someone stops.

Drift

Drift

This is the state of being in motion for the sake of the motion. It has no single shape: a run at dawn with no distance set, a dance that goes on until the music is the one that stops, a game whose only rule is that nobody stands still, a board on a dune, a suit with wings over the city, a night road with someone in the next seat and nowhere to be. Movement here is a culture, with its own contests, games and manners: some races are won, some are only ridden, and people talk, in motion, in a way the standing world has no equivalent for. What comes back is a way of perceiving the real that resembles nothing else, and it is reached only on the move. Some go alone. Some go together.

03

03

Playstate

Playstate

This is the state of play, and in the Systems play has no ceiling. A game can be a visor and a quiet room, or the whole city with a second layer laid over it; a real arena with a real crowd on its feet; a body that is not one's own, a machine the size of a house or a beast with a rider, steered from inside. An Echoform goes into it the way a child goes into a game at the age when a game is the most real thing there is: completely, with the rules taken as law for as long as they last. Losing stings. Winning is shouted about. When it ends, another one starts, or the evening does, and either is fine.

04

04

Hyper Self

Hyper Self

This is the state of being looked at. The body is the work: trained and cut, lacquered or gone to chrome, under jewellery the size of armour. It is narcissism, pumped and polished, and the Echoform in it would not argue. The old reasons to want that died before the Fusion; this appetite grew where they stood. A crowd can be rendered in a second and never gets bored, which is what makes it worthless. What they want is a living face turning their way, somebody who could have looked elsewhere. The room can be rendered, as long as the faces in it are not; the Systems can give them anything but that. So the day goes where the living are: a layer over the city, a platform with the crowd under it, cushions by the sea, somebody on the steps.

Co-presence

Co-presence

This is the state of being in one moment with someone. Two, or a few: across one bed in the afternoon, back to back on a rail above the city, in the water at night with heads together. Each is entirely here and knows the other is. The talk goes where it goes, the silences belong to both of them, a hand on a shoulder carries what the talk did not. An Echoform in this state is turned fully toward whoever is there and is met the same way, and for as long as it lasts there is one present between them, with nobody keeping a part of themselves outside it. Time is shared the way the water is: the same hour on everyone's skin at once.

Ambient Sync

Ambient Sync

This is the state of going under together. The eyes close, a thin band of light settles over them, and the room stops being the room. Whoever is in this state at that moment, anywhere in the Systems, is in it with everyone else: one warmth, and a slow pulse that belongs to nobody in particular. Sensation runs through all of them at once, and a memory that surfaces in one is, for the length of the trance, everyone's. It is a trance, and a bright one. Nobody is afraid inside it. Coming out is slow, and not everything comes back to its owner. A little of the feeling stays shared, and the next time two of them pass on a street, each already knows something of what the other is carrying.

07

07

Soft Creation

Soft Creation

This is the state of making something for the pleasure of it. An Echoform in this state is on easy terms with whatever is at hand: flowers to arrange, a favourite song that will be sung again tonight, a structure that may or may not stand up. What comes out can be remarkable, and often is, but nothing is put into it to be found later. Serious creation, the kind that fills a work with meaning and goes into the world to study it, is the Formbearers' work; the line between them and the Echoforms runs exactly there. The pleasure is spent in the making, and the thing is finished when the afternoon is.

08

Sustaining

Sustaining

This is the state of looking after oneself, and the one state in which an Echoform keeps a schedule. The body is kept in order like anything well made: checked, repaired where it needs it. Much of it is the oldest work there is, ordinary training, and it has come through from the world before the Fusion unchanged: strength is still built the slow way, and what is built along with it is character, a steadiness that reaches the whole person and not only the muscle. There is pleasure in all of it, taken without hurry. The mind is tended separately and on purpose: stillness, the state of the day looked at and allowed to settle. Why any of this, they would not say. It is what keeps a life lived this brightly from burning through.
